Before I delve into this comparison, God gave me a backup scripture: “ Matthew 11:28-30 (KJV) Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Remember the scripture as we go.
Now back to David and Saul; David was ready to go and face Goliath who was their ultimate enemy as it then was, and there was a need to be equipped. That is a fact; No man faces an enemy bare.
Saul believed that the armour he prepared for David was going to be the best coverage. It carried his years of experience, training and expertise. He was a man of war and knew all about safety.
But the armour was too heavy for David. Why?
David wasn’t that man.
He was a shepherd, a man constantly in motion knowing that you have to be as light as possible to move swiftly and go far. But that aside, David was a man of the sheep who knew no battles but rather vulnerability and total yieldedness to God.
God’s covering was all he knew and depended on, not the covering of the most experienced warrior.
Saul’s armour was heavy and difficult simply because it was MORALITY.
David’s armour was easy and light simply because it was GRACE.
God made me understand that to defeat the Goliath of Sin, you don’t need Saul’s armour which has already been made heavy by moral experiences and knowledge, going to church every day, praying and fasting mechanically and overall self-endorsed morality; in essence… the LAW.
The law is too heavy for this battle.
Now the scripture comes to mind.
David’s armour was invisible but impenetrable. It was light and easy and allowed for swift movement. It was God’s covering, His yoke which is all we need.
Grace makes the fight seem effortless like it was with David.
So do you see why we struggle with righteousness and why we give up easily?
It is because we take up Saul’s moral armour instead of David’s armour of Grace. You can’t win the war against the flesh just by the things you know and learn.
But is there a solution to this? Of course, there is. The solution is total surrender and yieldedness to God. When we do this, God strips us of SELF, He strips us of everything we believe we know, all pride and arrogance, and self-righteousness.
Then He clothes us with His grace that sustains and overcomes. It is with this Grace that we are able to live the life of Christ, the life of purity, and the life that is resistant to sin.
So all we need to do is to surrender ourselves to God and let Him clothe us with His Grace.
