Education is not confined to the four walls of a building, as many claim and preach. Education is broad because it cuts across every area of life. It is not limited to career development. It includes social, mental, financial, marital, and most importantly spiritual formation.
Recently, I observed how some of the so‑called “educated” speak and look down on their fellow human beings.
I corrected a lady who spoke harshly to a man old enough to be her father. I insisted she apologize. Her boldness came from one thing, his status. He was a security man.
I also remember an incident from my childhood. I was about 13. My family attended a church program, and during a break, I went downstairs. There I saw a girl hand a food flask to their driver and command him to wash it. The driver collected it immediately.
As a child, I was shocked. I went upstairs to tell my parents and siblings what I had seen. I reported it with disgust. My parents didn’t need to say anything I believe they were silently grateful that I recognized it as rude and disrespectful because status should never determine how we treat someone.
Hello mums, there are values the four walls of a school can never give our children. Only our parenting can. And if we fail to give our precious ones these core values, they become a nuisance to us, to society, and even to themselves.
Let’s teach our children respect, empathy, sympathy, love, honesty, godliness, and every good virtue.
Use the rod where necessary and remember, the Word of God and your words are also rods. Do not spare the rod, or you will live long enough to see a spoiled child.
If your child already displays such traits, caution them immediately and repeatedly whenever it occurs.
A child’s first education must come from their first teachers, the parents.
If this foundational stage is downplayed, parents should be ready to dance to the rhythm of regret, the beats of pain, shame, and tears.
